ADHD The True Facts

A damaging misconception about ADHD is that poor parenting skills is thought as being a key factor in children developing ADHD. This is not the case, more and more scientific evidence is pointing to the condition being the result of biological causes.

Many consider that ADHD is not a recognised medical condition. This is incorrect, in fact ADHD is officially recognized by leading medical experts and institutions around the world.

Another fable is that children with ADHD will outgrow the condition when they get older. Unfortunately that is not true. It is estimated that as many 60% of children with ADHD still have the symptoms in their adulthood.

A belief is that ADHD affects more men than women (by a ratio of 4:1). The reality is that many girls are affected by ADHD but go undiagnosed. In adulthood it is estimated that both men and women seeking treatment are fairly even.

A common misconception is that ADHD can only be treated with medication is proven not to be the case. With the most common medication being methylphenidate, which is better known as Ritalin and Concerta. But like many medications there are adverse side affects. Recent studies have shown that the most effective treatment of ADHD is a combination of medication and behavioural therapy. So if you want to see what options are available to you, we suggest you speak with your healthcare professional to establish the best treatment options for you.
