Common ADHD Myths


As such a recently discovered disorder, there have been many myths and misunderstandings that have developed surrounding ADHD. The following are a few of the more common ones that should be clarified both among the ADHD and non-ADHD world.

Myth #1 ADHD Isn t a Disorder, Only a Lack of Discipline and Good Parenting many people still seem to believe that all ADHD children require is old-fashioned discipline and their symptoms will go away. This is an extremely damaging impression for sufferers of ADHD and their families. It makes them feel a shame and guilt that is completely undeserved. Furthermore, it makes the ADHD sufferer feel as though s/he is somehow a bad child. Though disciplinary treatments have been tried in several different cases and methods, by providing more discipline to ADHD children, their cases actually worsened, rather than improved.

Myth #2 ADHD Learn to Make Excuses Instead of Accepting Responsibility for Their Actions educators, therapists, and physicians consistently teach ADHD children that their disorder is a challenge, not an excuse. While medications and/or glyconutrients are usually used to correct the chemical imbalance related to ADHD, it is also important that children receive behavioral therapy to help them adapt to meet society s responsibilities, instead of making excuses to avoid them.

Myth #3 Teachers Would Rather Push Pills on Kids Than Deal with Overactive, Inattentive Students Teachers have the best interests of their students in mind when they make decisions and offer advice. They spend a great deal of time every day with their classes and witness the achievements and the struggles. Teachers don t routinely push pills; if they see an attention or concentration problem, they offer information to the parents who can seek appropriate diagnosis.

Myth #4 Helping Children with Attention Difficulties Works Better than Medications though children with ADHD may achieve better when they receive extra help from teachers than when they do not, it is not the solution to the problem, it is only a few extra grades. By treating ADHD children with a combination of medications, behavioral therapies, and extra help in the classroom, a child can achieve much greater results. The teacher alone cannot cure ADHD symptoms.

By understanding the difference between facts and myths about ADHD, we as a society will be much better prepared to offer the support and understanding that is required for a high quality of life among ADHD sufferers.

Autism Symptoms Checklist

Children suffering from Autism may not display all of the signs and symptoms in this Autism Symptoms Checklist,because they are all individuals. However if you suspect your child is showing any signs of Autism you should seek medical advice.Early signs of autism are usually diagnosed when the child is three years of age. However early signs can be detected. There is a great deal of research taking place at the moment into trying to diagnose Autism earlier in a child's development.the earlier signs of Autism are detected the sooner they can be treated.

CHECKLIST

1. Can I have eye to eye contact with my child. Most children with autism do not have eye to eye contact and tend to stare fixidely at one object.
2. Is my child interested in things around. A child with autism does not point at things or try to bring things to the attention of his/her parents.
3. Is my child deaf. Quite often these children will ignore people around and will not respond to their name .Thus giving the impression they are deaf.
4. Can my child communicate as well as other children the same age. An autistic child can have little or no verbal skills and does not try to overcome this by using mime or pointing at things.
5. Why does my child never smile. The autistic child does not smile or react to someone who smiles at them.

6. Why does my child scream for no reason. Another common sign of autism is when the child has wild tantrums for no apparent reason.
7. My child has no friends.There is little or no interaction with autism. The autistic child prefers to play alone.

AN INTRODUCTION TO ATTENTION DEFICIT DISORDER

One of the most wrongly diagnosed and wrongly understood neurological conditions in the world is Attention Deficit Disorder or more commonly known with its acronym of ADD. The reality is that the majority of people lacks a proper understanding of the disorder, and also would not be able to identify it if they met a person with ADD. This article, and there is more to follow, intends to give you information about ADD, the meaning of the disorder, the methods by which it is diagnosed, the various treatments, and some topics regarding the issue. And let's hope that this would be a valuable tool by which your knowledge and ability to understand the disorder will increase.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or shortly ADHD/ADD, is a problem where the individual who is affected by it fails to be attentive for a long period of time. Motor restlessness and impulsive behavior are other indications of the disorder. Reports suggest that approximately 4.4% of all adults possess some degree of ADD.

ADD is understood as a disorder of the neurobiological type caused in brain by a glitch in the dopamine neurotransmitter systems. Genes play a huge part in maximum cases. There is 30% chance for a child to have ADD if a parent or near kith and kin has the disorder. In cases of twin children, if one of the pair has ADD, the other's chances of being struck by the disease increases by 50%. At one time the belief was held that ADD could be caused by poor nutrition, but it has been dismissed now as a myth. Similarly, allergies, drugs or bad parenting could be cut off from the list. Deep head trauma, fetal alcohol syndrome, intoxication through lead, and thyroid irregularities, are some of the other medical conditions showing symptoms like ADD. Hence it is advised that the other possibilities are rules out completely before the person could be said to have ADD for sure.

Having ADD means that an individual having it is not getting sufficient neuro-chemicals. Said in simpler terms it signifies that proper stimulation of the brain is missing, as a result of which the brain attempts to find methods by which the release of the chemicals can be increased. People with ADD try to stimulate their brains with things like physical activities, movements, and always doing things that stimulate or are stimulating. This is not a conscious decision on the parts of the people with ADD. They really cannot help themselves and it becomes a reflex action and they act in a hyperactive manner. The difficulty caused by this is that individuals who suffer from ADD, when face a circumstance that do not stimulate them, like school work, try to put their attention on something that is stimulating to them. Of course the school work is completely hampered by this, and the child cannot perform well in his or her studies. I can narrate a story here told to me by a friend. This incident happened when knowledge about the disease was poor. There was a child who would suddenly get up on his desk when the class is still commencing, and would begin to tell jokes. In the beginning people thought that he was trying to be funny and consciously disturb the others. But over time it came to be known that the child had ADD, and his actions were beyond his control.

Personal relationships and the ability to be permanently employed also become cause of concern for people with ADD. Then legal issue also crop up when ADD causes people to take dangerous chances with themselves and end up doing careless things to stimulate themselves.

Talking to Your ADHD Child's Teacher

If your child has ADHD, talking to his teacher may be the most important thing you can do to help him function more effectively at school in spite of his ADHD, and maybe even because of the ADHD.

Most teachers want to help their students, and most teachers have had ADHD kids in their classes before, if they've been teaching long. In general, teachers want to understand ADHD and the ADHD child and in particular they want to understand your child, their student.

Your first step in talking to a teacher about your ADHD child should be to simply explain that your child has ADHD, that it ADHD is a common childhood illness, and that you and your child's doctor are ready to provide any information the teacher requires about ADHD, including a list of books and web sites that discuss teaching the ADHD child.

Next, ask if your child is having any problems in the classroom or on the playground. If your ADHD child is having problems at school, find out what they are, whether they are likely related to ADHD, and what you can do about them.

Your child's teacher will need to know what ADHD medications your child is taking, even if he doesn't take them at school. Also explain any other ADHD treatments your child is receiving, including therapy or special diet.

Finally, find out if your ADHD child can get any special services. If you are in a public school in the United States, the answer to this is yes, there are accomodations available for ADHD kids. Private schools or schools outside the U.S. will have different ADHD accomodations.

If you feel you haven't gotten the results you hoped for by talking to your ADHD child's teacher, or if the teacher feels there is more that can be done, you can also talk to a guidance counselor. These specialists may know more about ADHD than your average teacher and may be able to help.

Solving the "Resu-mess" - Applicant Processing Systems

For individuals in search of a new job career, it is as easy as Copy, Paste, and Submit. Job opportunties abound for skilled workers. Internet recruiting has progressing from simple resume emailing to candidates submitting video resumes and podcasts. But as with many technologies, convenience often drags along complexity.

Just like the neighbor attending an open house just to get a peek how the people on the other side of the street live, an increasing number of job candidates are just "shopping". Add those to the serious candidates looking for better opportunities and hiring managers are receiving a massive influx of resumes - an HR administrative nightmare I call the "resu-mess".

No longer do managers just receive a dozen or so of resumes mailed or faxed from a single classified ad in the Sunday classifieds. They are greeted daily with hundreds of emails clogging inboxes from Internet job postings. After years of cutting back on the size of human resource departments or just adding more and more responsibilities on the shoulder of the HR generalists and recruiters, it is fair to say that reviewing and processing these resumes is like having eight lanes of traffic exiting onto a two-lane side-street. This translates into a bottleneck at the hiring tollgate.

The bottleneck leads to two devastating business mistakes - cutting back on advertising and poor response time

In order to manage the resu-mess, successful recruitment marketing strategies are being derailed by the voluminous response of applicants. Managers reduce the number of job boards and other media outlets on which they advertise to better manage the number applications. This strategy is tantamount to HR suicide. Considering today's challenge of finding the right candidate in a shrinking talent pool, throwing out the widest net possible, not cutting back, is in the best interest of employers.

But more resumes isn't necessarily better without automating the process. Few managers, human resource professionals and assistants have the time to screen the applications, call the candidates, do the the voice mail dance, complete phone interviews, schedule face-to-face interviews, check references, complete background checks and so on.

Experimenting With An Attention Deficit Disorder Diet

As anyone who battles with Attention Deficit Disorder or struggles along with a child will tell you, there is little you would not do to reduce symptoms in an effort to manage the daily struggles of this condition. Effective medications continue to make their way to market and experienced health care providers continue to make strides in battling this disorder. So it stands to reason that those who struggle with Attention Deficit Disorder would gladly assess the benefits of an Attention Deficit Disorder diet should it show promise for success.

ADHD Higher Probability For Premature Babies

Premature babies born at 34-36 weeks are 70% more likely to have ADHD when they are older, according to researchers in Denmark. If the baby is born before 34 weeks the probability of having ADHD increases by 300% (Data from the Danish National Register).

The study involving over 30,000 children found a link between children having a higher risk of ADHD if they are born under weight, than those born with normal weight.

The study found that those babies being born at full-term and weighing between 1.5 - 2.5 kilos (3lb 3oz to 5lb 5oz) were in fact 90% more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD when they are older, compared to those babies which were full-term and born at normal weight. With full-term babies which weighed 1.6 - 5 kilos (5lb 6oz to 6lb 6oz) having a 50% higher risk of getting ADHD.

Statistics of premature births in the United States shows that 8% of babies are born under weight, with 1.5% being of very low birth weight. Recent studies are revealing that the number of premature births is increasing at an alarming rate in the developed world.

Social and economic factors are to blame say many researchers, as many mothers are for financial reasons having to work late into their pregnancy. Combined with the fact, more and more women are under increasing levels of stress day to day.

There is mounting concern in the UK, as a report on the statistics of premature births taken from ten European countries about to be published will place the UK at the top of the list. Prof David Field, of the University of Leicester, said: "We are pretty sure that the rate of premature delivery in the UK compared with other countries in Europe is very high and it is on the increase. With the main increase of premature babies occurring at the 27- to 32-week gestation group. Researchers are saying there are a number of factors which may be influencing this increase.

A major concern is that many women do not have the choice to finish work early and have to continue working late into the pregnancy. This longer working period places considerable stress, on both the mother and unborn child.
