ADHD Latest Developments

Omega-3 fatty acids could help those with ADHD. It is hoped that a new study will give a greater understanding about the effects of Omega-3 fatty acids on the brain function of children who have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

The Murdoch Childrens Research Institute will be conducting the trial. Which will entail the analysis of 150 children with ADHD over a 12 week period. Monitoring the effects of Omega-3 fatty acids on behaviour, attention span, learning skills, memory and reaction time. Alongside this study 100 children without ADHD will also be monitored.

Fish are a key provider of Omega-3 fatty acids. Increasingly the evidence is that chlidren are not eating sufficient seafood, resulting in a lack of fatty acids. It is this decline in the level of these fatty acids which may be associated with the development of problems like ADHD.

The evidence for positive effects of Omega-3 fatty acids in children is mixed and the Murdoch Childrens' study will be one of the first to examine the issue in detail.

Researcher Dr Alex Collie says "ADHD is such a common disorder in Australia. This study will be an important step in validating claims that omega-3 fatty acids have a direct affect on cognition as well as behaviour."

Well know stimulant medication such Ritalin and Concerta are currently the most prescribed treatment for ADHD. But now there is a growing awareness that alternative treatments are available as both parents and those affected by ADHD search the internet for information from bloggs such as this one.

Those children taking part in the study will in the first, fourth and 12th week of the study undertake learning and behaviour tests. Throughout this time the children will take supplements of either Omega-3 fatty acids or placebo (supplements with no active ingredient). Both parents and the children's teachers will also take part in the monitoring and rating the childrens' behaviour.
